A bit crap

Unread post by Jacket »

All of this is a bit crap innit? Crap, dour football on a TV screen with cardboard cutouts for fans. If this was your first experience of football would you ever have become hooked? I very much doubt it! I still remember hearing and feeling the roar of the North Bank on my first visit to the Vetch donkeys years ago. Can't remember which division we were in, I suppose I could always check, but we were nearer the bottom of the pile than the top.

Even when this is over can you imagine playing in League 1 or 2 at the Liberty? It's been grim enough in the Championship, with 5,000 in there it would become a gigantic echoey bowl. I've never been down to watch the Ospreys but on those glimpses I've seen of it on TV, it looks like the kind of place that would suck the very life out of you.

I know we've played lower division football there before, but that was on the way up. Having whitnessed the 80s at the Vetch, I can vouch for you that while the way up is joyous when things go your way, the way down is a desolate land, devoid of hope. Without the roar of the North Bank I think it would be unbearable.

Bloody hell, last night has depressed me.

Only watched from around the 50 minute mark last night and I was thinking similarly, why am I watching this crap ?
Had to stay with it until the end though and then quickly turned over.
That last minute free kick that we had, I felt that the ref delayed the taking of it for no reason other than to run down the time.

If we don’t get back in to football at all this season I wonder how many will have become so disconnected from the game that season ticket renewal will become a bridge too far and take up will be very low. That feeling will be exacerbated by the fact that we’re painful to watch but even getting to the playoffs was a kind of remote excitement and the sense that we’re not really part of it any more.

Maybe I’d feel differently if we were flying at the top of the league and playing exciting football?

Last night really was depressing. Of course the football style isn't helping, but the lack of atmosphere on a grim, wet Tuesday night in Birmingham was awful. I said on the MD thread that I wish Swans TV put some form of fake crowd noise on there, I know it sounds daft but it makes a difference, to me at least. I'm sure they were doing this towards the end of last season? Otherwise it just feels like watching a kickaround in a park.

Night games aren't what they used to be anyway. Maybe we've been spoilt recently with PL attendances etc, but even in the PL the night games felt like people were there because they had to be. It's absolutely nothing like the night games at The Vetch, nearly every one was some kind of event...not necessarily because of the football because a lot of it was shite during the 90s when I was growing up watching us, but because of the atmosphere, the characters, huddled on the North Bank, cigarette smoke in the air, the smell of booze, nuclear hot pasties...

Football has changed. In some ways, great, because it's generally more family-friendly...but it's a great shame that kids will never grow up experiencing what most of us have experienced.

I have a feeling that football will recover, though. Once fans are allowed back in, I'm sure that attendances will skyrocket (depending on how safe people feel), for the first few months at least.

Let's be fair we all knew with that free kick it was going to be floated into the back post and cleared with ease and that was assuming it cleared the first defender

Been running this place since 2001, still gives me a headache now!

So who would have been your choice of manager over Cooper?
Remember Birch and his team were faced with choosing a manager knowing funds were tight, and there would be a turnover in personnel,
Cooper ticked some boxes in that he had connections to the "best" emerging English talent, had experience of coaching young players which is what we look like being left with.

The football is not as exciting as that under Martinez, possibly on a par to that we saw under Jackett, at times there signs of us trying to play football. Many were predicting that we would repeat our previous drop through the leagues following our relegation from the PL....we almost got to the play off finals...and Cooper was trying to win that game at Brentford many critisced him for sending up so many defenders early on for the corner which resulted in Brentford breaking away and scoring yet Cooper was looking for us to get an early score to put the pressure on Brentford then we were chasing the game.

I want to see exciting football...I ve seen a lot of ot over the years follwoing the SWans but I have also seen a lot worse than the fare currently being played....Football is about results these days yes I have walked out of the Liberty saying Id rather see us play exciting entertaining football and lose than dull, boring play which gives us a draw or narrow win but to the owners they will not be happy losing and slipping down the pyramid even if we always play like that much talked about 45 mins under Laudrup against West Brom.

We are a club in change with a rookie manager...he is much criticised for his lack and timing of subs yet last night he made a change at half time when he saw that things were not working even brought Cullen on with 25 mins to go so he is learning.

SO whats your answer sack him? Pay out compo from funds we dont have?,

We all reminisce over the good/bad old days... probably worse that we actually remembered in the 80's

The young fans have been spoilt to the core with us in PL.. Some will stay with it others will be Man Utd fans again

I actually forgot it was on and didn’t take advantage of the ‘free’ stream. Remembered about midday, looked at the result and didn’t really give a shit. The speed that I’ve stopped caring about the club I’ve watched since 1969 shocks me a lot, but I have. Should have had a refund. I won’t be renewing whatever division we are in.

The Covid response of those average half arsed pampered nancies on the pitch and the tug on the supporters heartstrings to pay the scummy turds was more than I could stomach.

Oh and Cooper is a fraud, total, absolute, 24 carat, diamond encrusted, crown jewelled, fraud.

Truthfully, I am just keeping an eye out for the score at the moment, but that is the same for all games.

I'm hardly watching any games on TV at the moment, just fed up and disengaged.

Such a joyous thread.

It's clearly time for such posters to find a new hobby. Constant, predictable whinging and moaning. Why bother ? Most younger fans can't be arsed with listening to this tiresome, wearing misery.

This virus is really doing untold damage to the game, even when things get back to some form of normality ,and fans are allowed back in,I think it will take a few years for the game to fully recover. Especially so when you read the effect it has had on lifelong fans like Monny and a few others on this thread.

Used to be baffled as to what the glory hunters got out of watching football, slapping themselves on the back when the team they chose to support for the precise reason that they were a big team that could win titles, ended up winning titles. But I am now starting to question what anyone is getting out of this crock of rotten shite that is modern football, where the clubs are big corporations with the sole purpose of generating cash for shareholders. Having said that I'll probably be watching Swans TV tomorrow, and will probably be back when fans are allowed back, but it'll be more out of habit and blind loyalty than anything else. I don't think anyone can blame anyone who stops though.
