Birmingham 1 Swansea 3

Sometimes it can be the hope that can kill you but this evening the Swans are just a point away from the play offs again after an excellent win away at Birmingham, fighting back from the disappointment of conceding an early goal in the process.

You got that horrible feeling of doom right at the beginning of the game with Freddie Woodman already having made a double save before the Swans went a goal down after just four minutes.

But this was not to be one of those nights where the Swans created nothing and toiled against a side that looked well organised.  It was a night where we fought back quickly thanks to the customary Rhian Brewster goal before a goal on half time from Cabango and a well worked corner gave Fulton a third and secured the points into the process.

With Cardiff falling to a defeat at home last night the door had been opened to get us back into the play off race and Steve Cooper’s side was in the mood to take advantage of that and with Derby losing at West Brom it has proved to be a very good 24 hours for the Swans.

There are – of course – potentially tougher tests to come with Leeds at the weekend to be followed by 5th placed Nottingham Forest but we go into those games off the back of seven points from nine and surely in some of the most confident form we could be in.

The more you look at the league table it is looking more like a four way battle for two spots in the play offs with Forest finding the chasing pack closing them down – something that could of course happen more if we get a result there next week.  Derby have slipped away slightly and the Swans have taken full advantage and with Cardiff away at promotion chasing Fulham Friday night there is nothing to be taken for granted anywhere in this place.

As with Saturday, this was a game we simply had to win and we did it with more ease than we showed at times.  We could easily have had more and with Brewster up front we should always look like a team ready to score goals.  He was denied a couple of times by some good keeping from the experienced Lee Camp.   By the time the third had gone in, the Swans were home and dry and Birmingham never looked like a side that were going to force their way back into the game.

As we said at the beginning it could end up being the hope that kills you but right now the Swans are very much back in the promotion hunt and its onwards to Leeds at the Liberty on Sunday.
