Hands up if you remember Tom Butler?

There will be many of us who remember the FA Cup and January 2007 when the Swans – then a League One side – went to Bramall Lane in Sheffield and tore apart their Premier League opposition 3-0 thanks to three second half goals.

Two of them were scored by Tom Butler – two of only 11 goals he scored for the club in a 6 year spell with the Swans and two of only fourteen he scored in his professional career.

A certain Leon Britton was the other goalscorer that afternoon against a side managed by Neil Warnock who failed to give us any real credit for one of the cup shocks of that season “No, I wasn’t. I think if they keep on playing as they are they’ve got a chance of the play-offs, but they’re not good enough for automatic promotion. This had more to do with my team,” Colin said after the game.

Warnock was adamant that his side was only beaten because of certain missing key players ignoring the fact that Lee Trundle, Andy Robinson and Marcus Painter were all missing from the side.

Butler spent time with Sunderland before being loaned to Darlington. Then he moved to Hartlepool, before joining Swansea in 2006. “Throughout my career I’ve been in and out of teams,” he said, “but I’ve had injuries. I don’t think I’ve played a full season,” he said after the game.

Butler played his last game for the Swans in April 2010 – a home win over Barnsley but appeared on our Twitter feed today in conversation with threemenandafootball talking in part about his time at the Swans including a certain Lee Trundle.

  1. Used to tell a good gag too apparently ??
Will always remember having the privilege of Tom and Kris O’Leary’s company in The No Sign Wine Bar after they got back from clinching promotion at Gillingham.
Tom didn’t stop “crossing himself” all night.ย
    A genuinely lovely guyย

    • @swanjaxs wasnโ€™t he retained for a season due to the way he was in the dressing room and liked by his team mates ? Think that was him.

        Apparently soย

  2. That Sheffield United game was incredible, I seem to remember we had around 10 or 11 players missing through injuries and suspensions for the match. Tom Butler (and the rest of the cobbled-together team) really stepped-up to the mark that ย day and did us proud. And Colin Wanker would not give us any credit at all, the miserable tight-arse. ?ย

  3. I remember I was there outclassed them that afternoon with loads of our star players out Leon scored penalty for the thirdย

Been watching the Swans since the very late 1970s and running the Planet Swans website (in all its current and previous guises since the summer of 2001 As it stood JackArmy.net was right at the forefront of some of the activity against Tony Petty back in 2001, breaking many of the stories of the day as fans stood against the actions where the local media failed. Was involved with the Swans Supporters Trust from 2005, for the large part as Chairman before standing down in the summer of 2020.
