So How Far Can We Go?

I am of the generation that grew up before the invention of Sky Sports. Back in those days, football was on TV live maybe once or twice a year and one of the highlights was midweek matches that the BBC used to air on Sportsnight where you would spend the evening not listening to the radio and just watch the highlights not knowing the score.

Back then the FA Cup final was the highlight of the season. The TV coverage would start mid morning and you would see everything of the build up which included the teams leaving their hotels, the teams arriving at Wembley, a Question of Sport FA Cup final special and all sorts of coverage that would lead to the game itself at 3pm. It was a momentous occasion and one that players would tell you would be one of the pinnacles of their career and one that you always wanted your side to one day be part of.

As a Swans fan I guess it was one of those that you always hoped but never really believed would happen. Hence why I now take a viewpoint that when we have a chance to progress in cup competitions we should take it. The COC win last year was brilliant and a day I will never forget but an appearance in a FA Cup final for me would top it by some distance.

Of course even though we are in the last 16 of the competition we still need a bit of luck to progress all the way especially when you factor in that Arsenal, Liverpool, Manchester City and Everton are already through and likely to be joined this afternoon by Chelsea which would mean 5 of the current top 6 in the division are already eyeing up their own Cup Final day in May?

You know we would ideally like to avoid all of those in the draw when it is made this afternoon and I cannot be the only one wanting a home game against Charlton, Brighton, Sheffield Wednesday or Wigan to give us the best chance of progression on the weekend of February 15th. If we had some luck today then the five teams mentioned at the top end of the table could throw up a couple of games where they play each other to at least take two out of the occasion with maybe a shock to account for one more of them as well would be nice.

The other thing to remember is that for three of them – Arsenal, Chelsea and Man City they have a focus on a bigger cup that means more to them as well as the league that could mean that the FA Cup becomes the lowest priority of the three that again could go in our favour.

I have no real idea how far we can go in this competition but I still have my ร‚ยฃ10 that I placed on us to win the cup before the 3rd round was played when we were 50/1 at the back of my mind and that would double the pleasure if we were to triumph again at Wembley in May.

Either way though let’s see what the fifth round draw throws up and enjoy the ride while we are on it.
