Gomez Targets The Twenty Goal Mark

The Swansea City midfielder grabbed his 12th and 13th goals of the season in Saturday’s 3-1 win over Doncaster at the Liberty – a more than acceptable return from a midfield position.

However, he is not satisfied with stopping there and he has set himself a target of twenty for the season – goals that he hopes will lift the Swans into the end of season play offs.

The team currently sit in 9th place just one point off the top 6 and just two points off Bristol City in 4th place.  And with the long term top 3 all wobbling there is a belief that the automatic places are still up for grabs with all of the top 10 believing that maybe they could make the run necessary.

Speaking to today’s Western Mail. Gomez said “The second one was the best – it’s one of the best goals I’ve scored for Swansea

“The two goals I scored Jason (Scotland) assisted me with and he’s a great player.

“I don’t know how many I will score this season, but I hope 20. But the most important thing is that we get in the play-offs. Winning is more important than me getting 20 goals.

“We are playing very well and we can reach the play-offs.

“It’s important to play with good players and that’s what we have got at Swansea.

“The first 15 minutes were not so good but the rest of the game was the way we’ve played for the last 15 to 20 games,” said Gomez.

“We have to keep playing like that.

“Now we will go to Fulham (in the FA Cup tomorrow) thinking we can get to the next round. We are looking forward to the game.

“We should have beaten them at the Liberty and we have confidence to beat Fulham on their own ground.”

On his own future, the season-long loan signing from Espanyol added: “It’s difficult to know what will happen next season.

“Espanyol have many problems now because they are on the bottom.

“I will see at the end of the season. But I’m not thinking of my future now, I’m thinking of playing at Swansea and enjoying playing football.”
